Lean just beyond your edge. In any given moment, your growth is optimized if you lean just beyond your edge, your capacity, your fear. You should not be too lazy, happily stagnating in the zone of security and comfort. Nor should you push far beyond your edge, stressing yourself unnecessarily, unable to metabolize your experience. You should lean just slightly beyond the edge of fear and discomfort. Constantly. In everything you do.
Cold showers are one of the best things you can do to improve your life. An easy and everyday action to kick yourself out of comfort is taking ice cold showers. I know the first reactions would be “dude that’s crazy! Makes me sick.” Or “what’s the use of this torture?”. Simple really; It’s to gain mental (and physical) toughness. Think this through, is there anyone in the world or people you know that take cold showers? My guess is not many or none at all. Embracing the cold iciness takes courage. Courage is the state for breaking through fear and worries. This will keep your spirit unbreakable, simply starting the habit by taking cold showers. 5 / 10 min. cold shower is enough. I do this all the time. Now if you wonder if that’s all the benefits; Here is the overwhelming impact cold showers actually result with.
1 Builds tougher willpower
It take balls to voluntarily take those hellishly cold showers. The mind says NO, but you do it anyways. This crushes doubts cause your spirit it tougher than your minds constant nagging. Commonly folks never take ice cold showers. Doing something the instant you wake up, embracing the cold, takes tremendous mental strength. Overtime this mental strength and discipline will become an automatic habit so you don’t even overthink about it. Like Nike says “Just do it”.
2 Improves emotional resilience
Are you an sometimes an emotional wreck? Easily tickled by stress, anxiety or anger issues?
Cold showers seriously help. Your nervous system gets trained to be more resilient to stress. Cold showers act as a small form of oxidative stress on your nervous system. And overtime, the body adapts to this. Essentially, you will be a calm, cool, badass dude or woman. The first time you step in that cold shower, you won’t be able to think straight, let alone breath. But after a month, you will be thinking about your day in a Zen like focus as the ice cold water has no effect on you. This will translate into everyday life as you brush off stressful bullshit that would typically ruin your mood.
3 Improves skin and hair
Ladies I got you in mind for this. Cold showers makes you look look better. From skin to hair.
4 Reduces stress
By your own mental toughness you’re hardly bothered by feeling stressed. It becomes a small breeze instead of a hurricane.
5 Increases alertness
Cold showers boost alertness up to next level. Situational awareness similar to an adrenaline shot.
6 stimulate weight loss
Wow! A natural diet! Yes that’s exactly true and backed up by science.
Most people don’t know this, but there are two types of fat in your body. Brown fat & white fat. White fat is bad. It’s the body fat that we all hate so much. Brown fat is good. It’s function is to generate heat and keep your body warm.
When you take a cold shower, brown fat is activated, resulting in an increase in energy and calories burned to keep your body warm. So much so that according to this study, cold temperatures can increase brown fat by 15x the normal amount, which can result in 9 pounds of weight loss per year.
7 Improves immunity
Look here is the thing. We all get sick right? Once we caught a virus it’s done. Not with cold so much. In fact your body is so getting used to it that the toughness resist simple illness. An additional, yet crucial, part of the body that is affected by cold showers is the lymphatic system. What the lymphatic system does is help carry out waste from your cells. This is key in defending your body from unwanted infections. And when the lymphatic system is blocked, it will show up in symptoms such as frequent colds, infections and joint pain.
8 Improves circulation
Cold showers keeps you warm. Sound weird right? Cold showers improve circulation by means of sending blood down to your organs to keep them warm. This stimulation of the circulatory system is great for your overall cardiovascular health.
9 Wake up!
If I throw a bucked a cold water over your head whilst your sleeping you’d jump into midair. Cold showers are your natural cup of coffee, with adrenaline rush.
On the flip side cold showers makes you sleep better. Your muscles feel paralyzed and want nothing more than to lay down and relax at night.
10 Cold showers relieve depression
One of the most noted benefits of taking cold showers is that they offer relief for symptoms of depression.
Cold showers stimulate what is known as “the blue spot,” which is the brains primary source of noradrenaline – a chemical which plays a role in alleviating depression.
Plus the mild electroshock delivered to the brain by the cold shower (you’ll know exactly what I mean) sends an overwhelming amount of electrical impulses from peripheral nerve endings to the brain, which could result in an anti-depressive effect. There is a high density of cold receptors in the skin, much more than there are for registering warmth.
And according to this study, it’s not all just hearsay.

There are two ways to build this habit: Slowly or fully jump in. To the cold shower virgins who start slowly. Use one leg or arm till you get used to the cold and pull it back to relax. Then try one arm and one leg. Slowly adjust to the cold. don’t go too cold yet. Reduce the water temperature slightly below comfort. If you’re feeling up for it reduce it further. By the time you get used to this you don’t even think twice about it.
I myself jump straight in. I am grown accustomed to cold showers for awhile. Meditation like a Zen monk relaxing in the discomfort. Leaning slightly beyond my edge.
